Pound stretcher not a sale

Options
Pound Stretchers have a 50%off deal in all their shops   But when you look at the offers all the prices have doubled and in some cases the items have actually gone up in price  such as washing pegs on sale prior to till discount £2.99 after £1.49  price of pegs prior to deal £1.29  Tea bags before deal BOGOF two for £3.99 during deal no BOGOF £4.99 each making it £1 higher price  for two   Basket before offer £15.99 during £30after till £15   and this goes on and on  When i approached the Shop manager they replied it was not a sale but a stock clearance and it was an offer to purchase  nothing advertised  other than signs saying 50 % off everything in store    Surely it is illegal to suggest to shoppers that they are getting a deal / saving and then charge more is against the trading standards legislation  and completely mis leading

Having watched "Saving Poundstretcher" on C4 I can well believe they would bend the odd rule here and there.

Have they complied with this requirement if the price appears to have been increased prior to the sales?

What does the 28 day rule state?
This states that a period of 28 consecutive days within the previous 6 months would be deemed reasonable in terms of the least amount of time a product would need to be sold at a higher price before it could be reduced and genuinely claimed to be discounted.

There are a number of shopping chains and shopping destinations that blatantly break rules, have been televised for doing so and years on they are still continuing the same practices. So despite the alleged consumer protection its really a case of making sure you are happy at the price not buying simply because its claimed something is half price.

Its not clear from your story if they have initially increased their price and then at a later time discounted them under a promotion but still higher than the original price or simply gone from being £1.29 on day and being £2.99 marked down to £1.49 the next. As pointed out above, they have to be at the higher price for 28 days before being able to be marked down, though I understand if they have multiple locations then it doesn't need to be all of them charging the higher amount for 28 days.

When it first started it was the instore prices, new stock seems to have come in and its coming in at a higher price to be then discounted at the till.

The important thing here is Poundstretcher are not calling this a sale. They are calling it a warehouse clearance event and list it at all prices 50% off at the till.

So the price of the product has increased in places but the 50% remained the same - they are not marking down individual prices in store, its a blanket 50% (we got some seriously cheap stuff at the beginning to donate).

I don't think they are breaking any rules here...somewhat sly/less than reputable behaviour maybe I guess.
