Booking made January 2020 Auckland/Honolulu/Los Angeles return. Booking made through BYOjet. COVID hit, country closed, was informed booking in credit shell. Airlines to be used were Hawaiian and Virgin Australia International. I have been communicating with a BYOjet representative who informs me Virgin have picked up the booking and say I can only use my credit shell on their airline within Australia, leaving out of Brisbane airport! I am in New Zealand! Can anyone help please?

The old Virgin Australia is no more. The original filed for bankruptcy but they live on having been bought out by an investment business - but are a different shape and size to the old.
It sounds like at least some sort of credit still in place with the new Virgin Australia, so at least one up on losing all your money following a bankruptcy.
They do fly from Auckland so not sure why you could not use from there into and around Australia. Can't think why also you are told you must leave from Brisbane. You might not get the original credit for your VA/Hawaiian trip to LAX as I don't think that option exists now as a VA code share. You might need to work that Oz > LAX out separately. I'd suggest ringing back to question the restriction on only using ex Brisbane on domestic Oz only. That part doesn't sound right.
