Unless you go for one of the “cheap for a reason” companies, as long as you read your policy carefully and understand the cover you should be ok. If they want an annual dental check then just make sure the vet records say he’s looked in the mouth when you have your annual check/vaccinations, for example. You can challenge if you’re not happy with a decision - I got charged 2 excesses initially for my expensive overnight emergency visit but that was because the two vets had put different things in the report so it was treated as two illnesses. Just needed my vet to confirm it was actually the same incident and the second excess was reimbursed straight away.
And if all else fails, there’s always the financial ombudsman.

Thanks for all your advice. I've gone for BBM - I will save up for the excess (£130 plus 20%) and with a higher excess I have reduced my payments to an affordable £42 a month.
