We recently went to Cornwall for a week unfortunately timing our drive down with Storm Eunice on the Friday. We got to our holiday cottage luckily without any mishap and unpacked and settled in but after a few hours approx 19.00 the power went and didn't return until Monday at 16.00 so we were without power for 3 days. We had a log fire and the lady looking after the property got us some battery torches, candles and a couple bags of logs and was very apologetic and willing to help if she could. We missed our coffee and tea and had to go out if we wanted one until my husband had the bright idea of getting a camping stove which the lady offered to reimburse us for if we left the receipt for her. It did mean that we were having to go out for meals whereas we normally eat at the holiday accommodation and as we had a dog made it harder to fi d places to eat.Storm Eunice was unfortunate and out of anyone's control and as I said the lady in charge with really helpful but when I tell people about what happened they are telling us we could claim some money back even if it's just the money the electricity company refund the owners for those 3 days. Is this true or is the whole thing classed as an Act of God?

In these circumstances I certainly wouldn't ask to claim any money back. The cottage owner did all she could to help including paying for a camping stove. There have been posts on here of horror stories regarding cottage rentals where people were left to it when there were problems and not helped at all. Your experience restores faith in human nature.2

There is an entitlement to compensation if electricity is off for over a certain time, but that will go to the customer of the electricity company, not the OP. They could try getting it from the owner of the property, but given the support the lady gave them I certainly wouldn't do so.

Thanks to both of you for answering. I'm glad you both agree as I would have felt so awkward asking because the lady was so nice to us. I'm just sick of people going on at me saying I should get something back.but to me nobody could help Storm Eunice coming. At least now I can say I've made enquiries and I can't!0
