Can we cut tarmac along boundary with pavement to install edging?

  • Having had a look at the title plan, we do indeed "own" up to the middle of the road.  It had not actually occurred to me that that could be the case (I have looked at the title plan before, but it has been a couple of years).  I also read the deeds, and it seems we are to maintain a boundary 25 feet from the centre of the road.  Might need to get out a tapeline, but since the walls and fence appear to be original to the house, I think the walls will be in the right place.

I feel relatively safe in slicing up the edge of the pavement now - I had a little go at it earlier with a sharp spade and it went straight through and I was able to lift severals piece about 15mm thick.  If it's like that all the way along it should be easy enough to deal with.

Just checking - has the road actually been adopted?  A title plan showing ownership to the middle of the road would make me want to confirm that this isn't some kind of shared drive/road situation, rather than highway maintainable at public expense.  Do you know roughly when the house was built?

Owning to the centre of the road is pretty standard in Scotland, does not mean that the road is not adopted.

Our deeds show the same, and our road is certainly adopted.

It was built in 1924, and the road is most definitely adopted. It’s one of the main roads in the area.

SB, please just fit your two lovely rows of concrete whatsits in line with the inner and outer faces of your brick wall sections, and infill with gravel. It'll look lovely, it won't cheese off anyone, and if someone does complain, just give me your address...
Are you ok about working around the fibre box, or is it a pita? What if you coat it in PVA and stick gravel to it?

    (I'm kidding... :-)
