Google pay maximum locked android phone

Google support says UK limit unlocked phone is £45 GBP.  And "*Important: The United Kingdom limit may vary for specific issuers".
But online chat with Google pay they said the bank set the limits in the UK

Phoned my Building society.  They said the limit was £30 locked phone.  I said I recently paid £30.19 without unlocking my phone.  Was told by the woman that she was reading it in black and white.  After refuting that was correct I eventually persuaded her to put me through to her supervisor.

The supervisor said the same £30 limit locked and also said it was the merchant that set the limit.  I told her the same as I told the first person and what google said.  The supervisor then looked on the google site and then said £45 and that google set the limit.

Eventually I got to speak to someone who dealt with contactless payment and authorisation of cards/app.  She assured me that £45 pound was the limit for swiping locked phones and that they (the building society could not alter it).

So what about "*Important: The United Kingdom limit may vary for specific issuers"?  Well perhaps that applies to the banks who can change the contactless card swipe limit downwards from £100?  Perhaps they can change the limit for locked phones downward from £45 as well

  • It also depends on phone settings, I was certainly able in the past I think on my previous phone (Pixel 5) able to pay without unlocking the phone per se, I recall you just used the fingerprint lock to pay. I know on current Android you can activate the pay window but have to use a fingerprint unlock to pay

Apple and Google Pay normally follow card contactless limits and then can be higher (with device verification) if the card issuer/ retailer/merchant agree.
