in Cutting tax
Received a letter today for self assessment charges from March 2002 till 2006 for not handing in tax returns, no excuse but I wasn’t in a good place and don’t think I was working or living at home at that time. Is this time frame ok before I contact them and does anyone know if they will take payments as I’m unemployed atm ?
Thanks
Thanks

Are you sure about the dates? They don't normally go back more than four, or possibly six, years.0

Yes 20 years0

Hi, have you registered for your HMRC personal account? If not, you should. Then you can login and check to see if the letter is genuine or not as all notifications about your taxes will appear in your online account.
Please don't agree to pay anyone anything until you have checked thoroughly that it's a genuine thing. That time lag seems very suspect. Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts. Although I do carry out careful research before posting and never intend to mislead or supply out-of-date or incorrect information, please do not rely 100% on what you are reading. Verify everything in order to protect yourself as you are responsible for any action you consequently take.1 -
What are the charges for? Is it late filing or late payment penalties? Like others have said regular penalties would not go back that far - maybe you can give us an idea of what the letter said as it sounds a bit suspicious to me.0

This doesn’t seem correct. Even if the enquiry did go back 20 years I don’t see why it would cover only five years - I would be very dubious!0

I think this is a scam - any forwarding details/address etc on it??0

I don't think the op is saying these charges have been levied now, it's just that HMRC are only chasing for the money now.
It may be a scam but I suspect not.1 -
