  • It must work differently every time then with other people as I have bought and sold 4 properties and contracts are always signed and dated on the exchange day in my experience.
My first buy was a nightmare as I had two hours to move before I went to work on a night shift in a residential college  for the disabled. I arrived only to find the sweet little old couple only just starting to pack the entire two bed flat up into boxes! My removal company were not happy, estate agent and solicitor didn’t care as they had already taken their cash. I had 5 minutes to get my belongings into the property before I set off for work, but in my haste I ran the castor of my armchair over my toe and ripped my nail clean off. Kitchen roll and 5 plasters later I arrived at work with foot a bloody mess, hardly able to walk but did my shift and then promptly went to the hospital to get it properly treated!
I have had some terrible experiences in the housing department.
Just hope this person got it sorted satisfactorily and all is well.

I guess it is different depending on your solicitor/conveyancer then, admittedly I have only sold 2 and bought 2 properties but both times contracts were signed and passed to the solicitor to hold until exchange, I assumed this was the norm. That way there is no delay if someone is unable to physically sign for any reason. Every time I have received a call from the solicitor saying, we are ready to exchange, can you confirm we are able to proceed.

    Also OUCH!!

That is the norm. But until you exchange, anything on that contract can be changed.
