British Gas transferred account and dodgy initial reading/bill

I've just had my gas and electric transferred to British Gas after my previous supplier went bust. My first gas bill was incorrect and was trying to overcharge me by more than £100.
I got my first gas bill for over £230 covering the period from 24Dec21 to 5Mar22
Just out of interest I looked through my account on their app/website and saw that my usage from 24dec21 to 16feb22 was only just over £90 which didn't seem consistent.
I called them up for an explanation. While trying to get to the bottom of this I realised that the initial reading my bill was based on was approximately 230 units less than my initial meter reading on 24Dec21 and so I was being overcharged by over 230 units.
My bill was quickly cancelled and corrected but I just had the impression that the person I was talking to from British Gas already knew about this problem suggesting that it is quite widespread
I'd just urge others who have also been transferred to British Gas to check their initial readings and that they aren't also paying for considerable additional gas they haven't used
At least that is £100 extra I have to go towards my higher utility bills from April
