Help with new easyjet carry on under seat size!

Hi All

I have spent time figuring out the best carry on bag that will go under seat on easyjet.  I have used cabin max before and they are great but I wanted a more hiking style backpack that is a bit more hardwearing for long term travel.  I use osprey for my work and they are really hardwearing so I would like an osprey bag.

Anyway I found the hikelite 26L which was 48cm high.  I noticed on a review it said hard framed so I emailed osprey with my question about whether I could squash it down to the easyjet 45cm and they said it would work well.

So I went ahead and ordered the osprey Hikelite and I am very annoyed to find on receiving it that the hard frame is the whole of the backpack therefore you cannot squash it down to 45 as they had said to me.  It is 48cm and no getting around it.

So my question for any regular fliers is do easyjet occasionally check bags even if they just look like a normal backpack?  If they do check are the baggage check spaces slightly bigger than the stated dimensions?  As I read a blog saying they thought it was a bit bigger than the advertised dimensions!

And if all fails and I get charged how much would it be and would I have to put the bag in hold?

I really want to keep the bag as it would work really well for me I just don't want to be charged extra for the sake of 3cm.

Since the bag has to fit under the seat in front of you  will the 48cms fit under the seat?

    From Easyjet website

If you’re unsure whether your cabin bag fits within our maximum dimensions, you can use our handy bag sizing tool on our app (iOS only). Simply open the app and click on your trip itinerary to find the bag sizing tool. You can then use your mobile phone camera to size your cabin bag. If it fits inside the maximum cabin bag dimensions for the bag type you’ve selected, you’re good to go. ”

I travel a lot with easyjet and whether you will have an issue depends entirely on the staff. On one trip this year a person directly across from me had a rigid style backpack that would not fit properly under the seat in front , the end stuck out into the footwell and staff were very unhappy. They found a space in an overhead locker in the end but passenger was told that he needed to check it in on return journey as it was too big and could cause an issue if passengers had to disembark in a hurry. Traveller did say that it fitted easily in the overhead but staff remnded him he hadn't paid for carry on luggagea nd that it was only becuase they wanted to close the door that the bag was kept onboard and not sent to hold.

That was a fairly decent size backpack though, my OH travels with a small rucksack type bag that squashes easily under the seat in front with no issues.
