Switch energy or not?
Options
Hi, I've recently become eligible to switch from prepayment g&e to direct debit (never could before due to credit rating) and I'm wondering if its worth switching?
I will be staying with the same supplier (British gas).
Is it worth switching to direct debit?
If so, do I change now or after 1st April?
I've currently got a build up of credit on both meters (gas £340, elec £255) so what would happen to that credit? Would it stay on my account as credit and at the rate I paid or would it be refunded as a cheque?
I do believe I would be better off on a direct debit but the figures they give over the phone are baffling. I've looked online but it says they can't give me a quote, yet can do over the phone.
Currently putting £100 each on g&e per month.
Heating is set to 23° all day (no bashing, I'm constantly cold)
Thanks in advance

It would be refunded either as a cheque, or as a balance on your account, but it would just be the cash amount, it has no link to the current energy prices as it isn't a pre-purchase, it is a pre-payment...You may want to reconsider changing at the moment, you will almost certainly be better off waiting until you've run that credit down at the old rate as I assume you intend to avoid topping up after 1st April to take advantage of the 'loop-hole' with pre-payment meters? (assuming your meter is not smart and you use a key to top-up)If your meter is smart then there is no reason to wait to change to DD.
