Obtaining coins when my bank has no local branch ??

Like many my local TSB branch is closing in May.
I am perfectly happy to use ATMs for notes and online banking for everything else, but occasionally I need to obtain coins (say £20 of £1 coins).
The problem is that none of the other banks will provide them unless I have an account.
So, what the heck am I supposed to do??  The nearest TSB branch will be 5-10 miles away and I dont want to switch banks only to find out they are closing too in a few months time!!!
Someone suggested the PO but I have been told that I would need a PO account.
Some supermarkets used to provide "cash-back" and a freindly till person would happily provide some in coins, but sadly few do these days.
Regards,
Bob

Simply open an account with one or more of the other banks.
  • When you use those notes, from the ATM's, in your daily/weekly shop you'll get change given back to you - give the shop £20 notes and you'll amass the pound coins easily, set them aside and you'll have the reserve you require.
    I do this very thing.

You do not need a post office account to do your TSB banking there. You should be able to withdraw a small amount in coin every now and then.

I've been able to withdraw £20 or so in £1 coins from the Post Office - as with Cashback it would be somewhat dependent on what they happened to have in their till.
  • Thank you MAB3000 for helpful information - I failed to find that info through my searching.
The staff at the TSB were not aware of that info and categorically said it was not possible without an account, which is surprising given they were there to manage the branch until it closes. TSB clearly doesn't care much IMHO.

I doubt TSB train their staff on the workings of the PO.

  • Find someone who pays money in for charity or ask at a local church. I bank money in both cases and I had 4 stone of change to pay in on one occasion. I would be delighted if someone would swap bags of change for notes.
