I have just been told by BT that my internet broadband bill will go up by CPI (5.4%) plus 3.9%. That’s 9.3% increase in my broadband bill mid contract. Possibly at a stretch I can understand the CPI but where does this random extra 3.9 % come from.?

It's not random, it would have been in the contract T&C's when you signed up or renewed (have a shufti at the T&C's that were in force at the time).

They started including it about 18 months ago and most of the ISP's now have a similar rise included in their T&C's

They now include it to stop people jumping ship mid-contract because of a price rise
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

Read your T&Cs.  You agreed to it.

And the weak regulator allowed them to do it.

Then people go on to complain about underinvestment and lack of line speed.  ;)

Call them. Provided I signed up for another 2 years I got a better price mid-contract so no rise this year
