This may not be the right place for this post, apologies if it isn't.

I am a pensioner and make use of online facilities but in a careful and limited way.  I use Firefox on a desktop pc and make no use of "devices" or social media.  I am extremely cautious about my data and always think twice before I do anything.  I do have my payment details saved on Amazon and in places like Screwfix but that said, I do not save my card details willy-nilly.  I have a Google account but have no card saved there.

Recently I received a Square invoice and when I clicked on "pay" it took me to a page that already had my card details filled in (or at least available for me to click on) and to which I then only had to add my CVC.  I never normally receive invoices and I am certain that I have never had any dealings with Square.  I accept that in this day and age of one thing being linked to another, somehow I have created this situation but I cannot figure how (the more-so given that I regard myself as careful and cautious).

There are no card details saved in my browser on a general basis, it would only be company-specific as mentioned above.  I should add the payment page said "Google Pay / Firefox" but I do not use Google Pay.  Can anyone offer my any help please just so I may understand the processes here?

Thanks in advance.

Square are a payment provider, who was the end merchant?

It could be that your phone has your details stored and automatically filled in the the form.
  • Thanks for posting.
Being a luddite, my phone only goes on when I need to make a call - never use it for anything else!  Everything is done on desktop.  The end merchant seemed to be Firefox / Google Pay but I do not save any cards to FF and do not use Google Pay.

Square is a payment provider which can be used by Merchants to accept payments or create invoices for work done or for services provided.

My barber uses a Square reader to accept payments via debit card, as do quite a few local coffee shops and sole traders, some use SUMUP which is another payment provider also recently came across an IZETTLE which is provided by paypal.

Recently had some plastering done and the plasterer sent me an invoice via Square for me to pay him, it did have his business name on his address to, and was paid while he was getting ready to leave.

Perhaps you do have a card stored on google pay, have you checked to make sure, and that's why its defaulted to a card stored for making a payment?

Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both.
  • Thanks for that and everything you say makes sense and accords with my experience ... except that I have no card saved to my Google account (which I only got involved in vecause of Youtube).  Don't use anything Google-wise (docs, payments, mail etc).  When it comes to my online security I hate not understanding things and a credit card is something you do not take a casual attitude to.  So I am stumped as to how this appeared with my details.  It seems to me that it is clearly getting it from some other facility I have used but that just seems wrong to me.
