My neighbours had a shed fire which spread to their privet hedge. About 5 meters was burnt to the ground. Four year on and except for one root it's all growing back. So be sure to get all your roots out.

Sounds about right to me for just cutting down and removing the debris, based on watching the work to remove our hedge.  Removing the roots is the labour intensive part.
  • Yep, this is to ground level. They'll assess the roots once it is down and see whether they can get their gear in or not and we’ll go from there.
  • Just thought I’d update. The hedge is gone, shredded and done in less than two hours. I am a very happy bunny! It looks likes they can get their machinery in to dig post holes for us too, which will save us a huge amount of work.

So we’ve decided we may as well replace some other falling down fencing at the same time. In for a penny….

Yes, just paint freshly cut ends. If stems are 4-5cm thick, drill them and run the mix in. Privet suckers, but it doesn't take much to bump it off, if the ones I've recently done are typical.
