Gas meter installation

Hi All,
I am installing gas central heating and need a meter fitted. I have my MPRN number but I am currently with OVO energy who do not fit meters and was told by them to go to a 'big 6' energy supplier. I have tried several but impossible to speak to a human, and going through the options being told they are 'busy' or not supplying meters at the moment.
I am not sure where to go from here?

Others have been having the same problem, recently. I can't remember the outcomes. Have you tried Shell or Scottish Power - I think people got a result with one, or both, of those

British Gas will install a meter, but there is a 6 week wait.
  • I think things have changed very recently, - probably with gas supply and price uncertainties. British gas telephone message just says ' we are busy with boiler breakdowns and not currently fitting meters'. I think EDF were the same? (maybe all?)
I am awaiting contact from crown energy, but am unaware of their charges as yet.
    Thanks for your comments all.

0333 202 9813, I think this was the number I used for british gas.  Was only a few days ago I got an installation date sorted.  The only down side is, you have to deal with british gas!
  • Hang on OVO Energy took over SSE so are a 'big 6' supplier. One of the reasons suppliers will be reluctant to fit a new gas meters is because you'll go on their SVR tariff by default. E.ON recently fitted a gas meter for me but only because they were funding a first time central heating installation for me.
  • I recently went through this process to get a new meter fitted for a house I purchased with an old gas supply that was found by Cadent (who own the gas main) to be live but then needed a meter.

I found E.ON to be fantastic. Called their New Connections line, they picked up straight away and the meter was fitted within 10 working days. Ovo told me 3 months and Octopus couldn't tell me a timescale but at least 10 weeks. British Gas left a message but never rang back. I honestly can't fault E.ON.

I needed to chase Cadent for the MPRN, once I had that then E.ON had a wasted trip because Cadent had confirmed the supply as live but without fitting an ECV (emergency valve). Without the ECV (Cadent's responsibility), E.ON couldn't fit the meter, so Cadent had to come back out, fit the ECV and then E.ON came back the next day.
