Changing private number plates

Please can I ask for advice on the best/correct/most cost effective way to move my own number plate from my car which I am part exchanging.
The dealer said I should put my plates on retention online with DVLA (no need to tell my insurance as you get a few days Grace 🤷‍♀️) then I will get in the post a new log book which I will take when I collect my new car/part exchange.
I then apply to put my private plate on the new vehicle online at dvla.
I had planned to pick up the new car in the 18th and my current insurance runs out on the 22nd.
Sorry for rambling and many thanks in advance of any advice/confirmations etc

  • You can do it online via gov.uk website. It's instant so you'll need to change your insurance at the same time. If you're buying a brand new car your dealer can assign the reg from your paperwork or do it yourself afterwards. Don't forget number plates if you haven't got them.

No such thing and the dealer should know better than to say that

  • If you put your current plate on retention, you’ll have to inform your insurers immediately once it’s done.

Then when you get your new vehicle, you’ll have to inform your insurers of the change of vehicle.

Finally, when you get your New V5, you can transfer your private reg onto the new vehicle using the new V5 document reference number. Once again, you’ll have to tell your insurers of this too.

Yep, insurance company will love it as they’ll likely charge you £25 a time for the changes
