Spending on-board Ferry

Is it best to pay for Drinks / Food etc. on board Ferries to and from Europe in Euros or GBP ?
Remember getting stung with exchange rate last time we did a crossing, but cant remember which way we did it.

£1 is about €1,20 at the moment, so it'll be up to you to decide which way is cheapest to pay when you get there.

On most cards for practical purposes, spending €1 will cost you 86-87p.

Call me daft (many do) but when on holiday I really wouldn't be splitting hairs about euro versus pound. Also, last time I had the misfortune to travel on a ferry it was horrendous. I was going to buy some food until I realised that most people on board had started vomiting. The whole thing reeked of it. And I couldn't get away from it, not even on the deck outside. Brittany Ferries. Ugh.

Put me right off - and I saved a fortune. It wasn't even a stormy sea! Never again.

Is there a reason to know in advance? Why not just look at the price list on the day?

As a rule of thumb it'll be cheapest in the company's own currency, so if its a UK ferry company GBP is likely to be cheapest.

most of the ferries from UK to France use GBP as their currency - so I would just make sure you get charged in GBP.

Brittany Ferries are registered in France but charge in GBP with Euros as an option.
  • I've travelled on BF many times.

I've paid for food, drink and items in the shop using my debit card or GBP cash.  No issues, no fees.
