Shell Energy

Watching Martin Lewis Live the other night I think he said that fuel bills should not increase by more than 50%. In 2021 our total combined gas and electric bill for the year with Pure Planet was just under £1,500. When they went bust we were moved to Shell Energy who are asking us to increase our monthly direct debits to £250.00, which equates to £3000 per annum, a 100% increase. is this right?

If you are on the SVT, which you probably are, then yes, prices have gone up considerably, as you may have heard on the news. However, direct debit payements are meaningless, on their own. What is a your actual (not estimated) annual comsumption? Armed with that you will be able to work out exactly what monthly payment will cove rit at current rates.1

When Pure Planet went under, you lost the tariff you were on and were moved to the SVT, so there was a (possibly significant) price rise at that point. The SVT rises again on 1st April.
The 54% figure is for a typical user already on the cap who has "average" usage of both gas and electricity, and refers to the change from 31st March to 1st April. It doesn't include any rises before.
