There's an initial burst of it when I first turn it on. Any troubleshooting ideas to identify and get rid of the smell?

How is it connected to waste?

Constant use of liquid detergents and low temperatures can make a machine smell, I use powder and run an occasional 60 degree wash with nothing in the machine. If installed incorrectly the waste water from the drain could be entering the machine.

Have you emptied the filter?1

It'll be the filter. Usually at the bottom of the machine with a little flap you can open to access. Water will come out at first so either lay down old towels or thin tray to collect the water. It will be full of little fabric and dust and it will stink!
Had the same issue recently, cleaned it out and volia - alls good so far.2 -

Forgot about that. Cleaned it at least a couple years ago. Will try again.ObserverOfLife said:It'll be the filter. Usually at the bottom of the machine with a little flap you can open to access.
