Fault with dress bought prior to lockdown

I bought a dress for my daughters wedding which was to be in 2020 but due to covid was postponed ...3 times ! Wedding is now in May this year but when I tried the dress on today  it appears the zip is not working smoothly and it is sticking so cannot do up without a fight ( and I have not put on weight ! ) I am worried that on the day I will have a problem any advice on my right to return or exchange after so long ?

No rights to a return/exchange automatically and I think after 2 years you are going to struggle. Have you spoken to them and if so, what have they said?
Might be worth contacting a local company, might be able to repair it for a reasonable price.
  • I think the return or exchange ship sailed 2 years ago when you should have checked all was well with the dress.

I have never known a lady to NOT try on a dress immediately on receipt.

If it was purchased locally you may get some goodwill if you speak to the retailer nicely.

It was tried on at the time and no problem with the zip , I do not understand why I am having a problem now , it was still in original dress cover etc ,its almost as if the zip has seized .

When I worked for a dry cleaners we used zip spray on stiff zips. Usually did the trick

If your weight and/or measurements hasn't changed at all in 2 years of lockdown you must be the only person to be able to claim that.  Even if you weight hasn't changed, it's distribution may have.

It's not clear, was that the first time you'd tried the dress on? Or did the zip previously move okay?

There will be something safe to unstick it. An old method used to be pencil lead but you may not want to do that if the zip is light in colour. Worst case scenario a decent seamstress should be able to fit a new zip. But they're getting rarer and rarer these days with everyone favouring cheap and less durable clothing.

As its been (based on what you said) 2-3 years minimum since purchase, you'd have to show the goods inherently failed to conform to be entitled to a remedy. This is also assuming it is the zip rather than fabric not sitting right or a change in body shape etc.

It's very unlikely you'll be able to return of exchange the dress without a fight.  Firstly you'd have to prove the zip was sticking down to an inherent fault and not because of how it's been stored for the last 2 years - which would be tricky.

However,  whilst I fully admit I'm no expert, I wouldn't have thought a stuck zip was beyond the capability of a dress shop to repair relatively simply.
