10-15 years ago we used to back up some of our business records to CDs and DVDs, and I would now like to see what's still readable on those discs. Problem is that now we only have Chromebooks, so my question is - what is the cheapest type of CD/DVD reader thingy I can to plug into a Chromebook?

Any USB drive should be suitable, though officially AFAIK they are not supported. But they may work.Do note though that a Chromebook cannot write to CDs, or DVDs for that matter.1

If this is just a one off thing that you want to do, then do you have local family or a local friend or neighbour that will let you use their CD reader?A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".0
