Salzburg - Day Trips?

Hey guys,

Anyone been to Salzburg or consider themselves knowledgeable about it?

We're going next week and thinking of some day trips. Nothing *too* long and via public transport.

So far we have St Gilgen in mind, and the Zoo and Fortress (neither really being day trips I suppose!).

I've ruller out Halstatt - it's just too far to justify it, and recent reviews suggest it's a wash with tourists everywhere, like stupidly busy!

Any recommendations or tips most welcome :)

Ask on TripAdvisor, you are likely to get much more response there.

Oh yeah, I have pestered the gang on TripAdvisor and done some Googling for sure. I was just after some other tips and stuff.

Every now and then someone comes up with a gem thats not on the most popular list or top ten etc.

So just thought I'd chance my luck :)

I was going to suggest Zell am See, but it’s probably as far as Halstatt.  Couple of hours on the train, but that’s part of the fun!

That's actually on my reserve list! I went there about 12 years ago and thought it was nice, and yeah, decent scenic train journey! Cheers.

Some people go to Oberndorf to see the church where Silent Night was composed.  Never visited but I believe it is quite a picturesque area.

Cheers I'll look into that. See that wasn't mentioned on trip advisor or some of the most popular day trip websites!
