British Gas credit

Hi everyone! My previous supplier went bust, leaving me with a large credit amount. This was passed to British Gas.
I’ve been with them since November, paying £154 DD per month.
I checked my credit amount last week and it was £797. I chatted with an agent this morning to claim it back. He said he would bill me then refund my money. (?)
my bill was over £695 from November to present. I have been paying £154 every month. So.. I’ve paid a quarterly bill AND direct debit? I don’t understand.
Someone please explain it to me. 😞

If you were £797 in credit before the bill, that would indicate the transferred amount from your previous supplier was £181 ( 797- (4 x 154) ) assuming they have taken 4 DDs since you joined.

    Your latest bill is £695

    Therefore you current position is £797 - £695 = £102 in credit

Think of it like this, your DD and your credit from the failed supplier all go to fill up your account with money.
When they bill you the money is taken from your account to cover the bill.
So if you want to take money out of your account you need to make sure you've been billed recently so you can see how much is really left over in your account...

Do you really have received a bill for "over" £695 or is that what you have paid in this time frame.

Sound strange that the agent wants to do a bill if you just received one.
  • Thanks everyone..
I have worked out that I’ve paid British Gas £650 in Direct debits since I’ve been with them. Seems strange how my bill is just over this amount. I’m sure they’ve not taken into account my previous payments. 😣

  • If your DD is £154 as you say, then you will have paid them £616 !

It looks as you are quite lucky in that your DD is covering your actual usage.

Your previous payments are only taken into account once a bill is produced.

If you have not taken a fixed tariff deal, be prepared for a considerable price rise on April 1st

    ... what previous payments?
BG will be billing you for your consumption based on your meter readings since you became their customer, you said you had paid them a total of '£650' so what other payments would there have been?
