driveway quote- builder now wants more money

Hi All, I need some advice. We are in the process of having our driveway completed and was given 2 quotes from builder, one for tarmac and another for resin ( which was more expensive). WE confirmed we would proceed with the resin quote and work commenced. WE have been paying along the way. TArmac has been laid and resin due to go down next week. THe builder has now sent a seperate invoice for the cost of the resin stating its not in the original quote and was always going to be extra. I have desputed this till im blue in the face. I have questioned that we are paying and have already given him more that the tarmac quote becasue we wanted a resin finish. So basically the builder wants us to pay twice for the resin, once to him and another the the seperate company he is using to lay it. I have asked for a refund taking us back to the tarmac quote and just asked him to leave. He has refused and wants us to pay the outstanding amount AND the resin.
Where do I stand on this?
Thanks in advance.

What do you have in writing? Is it defined as a quote or an estimate? (Wording/phrasing is important).Jenni x3

I believe the resin itself is approx £90 per square metre, not including the hardcore and sub-base prep required. Does that match what the builder is saying?

The quote is labeled descripton of works and has stages of work to be completed.there are 8 stages and the last being Supply and lay resin. He has completed every other stange as per the quote.0

Where do you stand? He can't lay the resin without your permission, and there's sufficient ambiguity in his dealings to make it difficult for him to charge you for resin he hasn't laid. That means you can tell him to leave (as you have done) and send him a letter before action asking for the refund down to the original tarmac only quote. Small claims court of it comes to it.2
