Trv life expectancy

Is there an expected life for trvs, a point where it is false economy not to replace them. Or do they go on until you notice a problem?

Ours are about 20 years and the central heating guy says they should be replaced - there are 9 of them.

What would be the typical symptoms which would justify replacement?

Thanks for any comments

  • What would be the typical symptoms which would justify replacement?

Radiator failing to warm up/ pin on valve seized.

Life will depend on the quality of the TRV, and if there is sludge in the system.
  • Ours are 32 years old and still going strong. Would not replace without good reason.

Don't forget that the whole system will have to be drained down just to replace one TRV and on refilling inhibitor needs to be added - so allow extra cost for those.

Are you having other work done to the central heating system? If the system is going to be drained for other work such as a boiler change then it makes more sense to do it at the same time.

I've recently had one broken one changed, and the plumber didn't have to drain the whole system. He used an aquavac on the one radiator, and then topped the pressure up after.
