Tourist Tax - Balearics

The hotel we are staying in soon sent me the Tourist Tax tariffs as requested - I think these are the 2021 prices, however I assume they are still accurate.
Thought it might be of use for those heading there. After 8 days the rates have a 50% reduction for subsequent days only .....added to the 100% for days 1 to 8.
Some tourists to Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza are unaware of this additional holiday cost.
I read somewhere that the tax will now be extended to cruise passengers who are on a day visit disembarking at Palma, whereas previously they were exempt.
Note how a tax (IVA) is added to the tourist tax - I believe that is imposed by central government in Madrid.

On March 30, 2016, the Parliament of the Balearic Islands approved a law that obliged the holiday establishment to collect a "Sustainable Tourism Tax". From 1 July, any person who stays at a holiday establishment must pay the corresponding amount according to the type of establishment and the number of nights that remain in the establishment.

Prices per person and night in high season (01-May to 31-October)

Five star hotels, five star grand luxury and four star superior

4.40 €*

Four star hotels and three star superior hotels

3.30 €*

One, two and three star hotels

2.20 €*

Apartments with four keys and four upper keys

4.40 €*

Apartments with three upper keys

3.30 €*

Tourist apartments with one, two and three keys

2.20 €*

* IVA included (10%)

Tourist taxes are common in many countries and are there to support the infrastructure you will use during your stay.

I don't think that a tax from €2.20/night is overly excessive. You'll likely pay a lot more than that in council tax, and you'll still need everything this provides with the exception of schools.

Paying over the equivalent of 800 euros in Council Tax?  I don't think so.

There is no Tourist Tax on the Spanish mainland, likewise the Canaries - just an observation.
I do know that hoteliers and landlords etc. in the Balearics are not happy at having to collect and administer the tax on the behalf of local government.
Incidentally I believe education in Spain is funded from central taxation - may be wrong on that of course.

I know last time we went to Majorca they asked for the Tourist Tax as we were booking in ,although not a fortune in adds to your holiday costs .
  • It has doubled since its inception.
That also didn't go down well.
