i received a letter today form Newday advising that somebody had tried to open an account as me with Argos - something I haven't done. I called the number on the letter and they needed more information from me than i was prepared to share (not knowing who they are). Are they a legitimate company and am I wise to contact regarding the potential fraud they have advised of? the credit application was declined, but they say with additional information from me they can protect me. What should I do? Any help would be appreciated.

NewDay are a legitimate company, offering credit cards branded with their affiliated companies, such as Argos - if you have reservations about calling them on a number from a letter then you could always contact them via their published details at https://www.newday.co.uk/contact-us/
Not sure what protection they claim to be able to offer, but whether or not you sign up for anything they're offering, in your shoes I'd be more vigilant than usual and keep a very close eye on your credit files, in case the fraudster attempts to open any other accounts.

You might also consider taking out a protective registration with CIFAS, which entails extra checks for anyone (including you) trying to obtain credit in your name:
