EDF putting monthly bill up from £79 to £169 per month?
Hi, I know energy bills are due to go up from April, as i understand it by about 50%? But EDF are putting our monthly bill up from £79 to £169 per month.
So on that basis our bill should go up to about £120.
We were originally with utility point, but we were moved to EDF energy who have now said they have done a review of our account, but £168 seems a bit obsurd.
They hadn't even contacted me about this change, i just got a text today saying the payment has gone out of the bank account, and that it had taken us into the overdraft otherwise i wouldn't have known.
I had seen Martin Lewis shows in the past were they have talked about energy companies charging a lot more then what the increase is and that if it goes over that increase you should be able to argue with them why they have charged way over the 50% increase as it should only really increase by that? Ours is increasing by a little over 100%
What do you think i am best saying to them to challenge this or might it actually be right?
Regards
James

Monthly direct debit payments are meaningless. How much do you consume, per annum, what are the kWh and daily charge prices?0

Also what is the balance of your account, is there a credit or are you owing them money that they try to make up by increasing your debit order?
You don't have a monthly bill of £79, you are paying a debit order, which might be sufficient to cover your use or not.1 -
Just looked on my online account with EDF and downloaded the PDF, for electricity it shows:Annual consumption (based on estimates) 2,456 kWhand Gas is:Annual consumption (based on estimates) 14,680 kWhTheir charges are listed as:Electricity unit rate: 29.58p per kWh
Daily standing charge: 47.58p per day
Gas unit rate: 7.365p per kWh
Daily standing charge: 27.22p per day

How many kWh of gas and electricity did you actually use according to your last bill?

It shows them above, but then says estimated. We was with another company and they didn't use smart metres but did try to give a reading most months. So not sure how accurate or not that is with them saying estimated. It shows:Electricity:Annual consumption (based on estimates) 2,456 kWhand Gas is:Annual consumption (based on estimates) 14,680 kWh

I would be slightly cautious of any suppliers’ annual estimates. I was transferred to EDF under SoLR terms and I gave them an accurate annual estimate of 7771kWh/year for gas. My first bill came back with an annual estimate of 11400kWh/year. I have switched to Octopus and it is estimating my annual usage at 7800kWh.
None of this matters save for the fact that dodgy estimates result in unnecessarily high DDs.1 -
