Multiple Tax Codes

Hello
I don't think being on furlough from April 2020 to June 2021 has helped but what is going on with my tax codes. I called HMRC and they said they didn't know I'd left my previous job in Sept 2021 even though I had a P45! They said they would change my tax code and I should get a tax rebate but there was no guarantee. I've not heard anything since and now can't get through. Surely I'm entitled to a tax rebate!!!!!

Tax codes are simply a mechanism to allow estimated PAYE deductions to be made by those paying you and don't in themselves mean you pay the right or wrong amount of tax, so the question of whether or not you're entitled to a rebate is dependent on how much taxable income you end the tax year with and whether the overall tax paid was correct....1

After the tax year ends at some point HMRC will calculate the tax payable for 21/22, and compare it to how much you actually paid . You might get a rebate then .
Possibly the recent change in tax code is so you do end up paying about the right amount , but difficult to tell.1 -
