I have lots of photos that I would love to add a small story to. My idea is to leave my grandchildren something to look at when I’m no longer around. So, I post a photo and write about the people in the photo, ie my family members no longer alive. I’ve looked on Google but need help.
it needs to be digital as my writing isn’t too good.
Any advice welcomed.

Yes - the digital equivalent of the old shoe box full of family photos with the pencil notes on the back

A Facebook Group can do that for you  - you create it, it'll be private and can control who can enter - and set it to allow some chosen younger members to also be 'admin'

    I've done the same

Be interested to hear of other options

Google Photos possibly, but the Notes about a photo are a bit too much in the background

The downside of digital version of this, is the risk that the format/platform is no longer available or no longer used by the family in the future.

Especially if this is for after you are gone.

Imagine if this had had been done on MySpace, Bebo, Yahoo anything!

you could look at infraview - basically it saves you photos / story as an .exe file which can be distributed and run by anyone you choose to send the .exe to

Yes, Best not to rely on just one service / location
Have to pick your runners and riders careful as always

Google Photos for example only hold stuff for 2 years without login

If you fancy a project, create a presentation in MS Powerpoint, or the free LibreOffice equivalent, and export it as an mp4, which should be playable in the future. Store it on something like a USB stick and in the cloud (on a free service like Google drive) and just give other people access to it. You can edit such a project as time goes by, and export a new copy as you deem necessary.
As already suggested, don't rely on a platform such as Facebook continuing to exist in decades to come.

There used to be several (free) programs that would let you create a single .exe file from your selected photos.

Anybody could then run this .exe file and see a slideshow of your photos

Google 'create photo exe file album' (or something similar)

.exe files only work (natively) on Windows.Somebody only has to use this story book on some flavour of Linux in the future and it will not work, without a bit of work in WINE or whatever in the future will run EXE files in Linux?

Just because Microsoft rules the roost now with operating system share on the desktop, doesn't mean this will always be the case.  Case in point:  Internet Explorer used to have a 96% browser share back in 2001.  Now that market is ruled by Chrome.

I think the easiest and longest lasting solution to the OP is something printed.  Doesn't have to be hand written, just type all the blurb and "These are my cousins Rod, Jane and Freddy with my friends Zippy, George and Bungle when they went to the zoo in 1985 and got thrown out because Zippy ate all the sticky buns in the cafeteria" into Word or what not.  Keep the master file safe and run a new copy off every once in a while when the photos fade.

After all if Shakespeare had wrote all his plays on a 16th century version of Facebook they probably wouldn't have survived today.
