So much for your smart answers but you both forgot to preheat the grill and the final step of switching the grill off.

I'm guessing the OP wants instructions on how to switch the grill on rather than when to turn a piece of bread over but don't know until they come back to us.

Most Hotpoint oven have similar controls to the above, this is for a single electric oven so if you have a double oven it will look a bit different. Gas ovens will be different as well.

See left hand knob, turn to the grill symbol, on the right hand knob, adjust the grill heat - suggest max for toasting. Pre-heat for 5 mins for best results.

The oven should have a dedicated grill pan like this with a clip on handle. If it doesn't have the handle, just use some oven gloves.

Place the this on the top shelf of the oven, you may need to re-arrange the wire racks to do that.

Now the bigger question is whether you have the oven door open or closed when grilling. I have had ovens where the instructions explicitly say one of the other, and on some ovens the grill actually switches off when not in the recommended open or closed position.

Typically gas ovens are open door and electric are closed door for grilling but don't hold me to that.

Toasters are cheap to buy and cheaper to use than any oven grill

They don't work as well when you want things like cheese on toast or sardines on toast etc.

you can try on the side but can still get messy

On our Hotpoint, the grill won't come on if the door is closed. Door open to grill.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Indeed. When we moved in to our current house and tried the grill for the first time it smoked a lot, then the roof of the oven caught fire - which was somewhat alarming!

    This brings back an unfortunate memory for me . It could have been a lot worse . Two things I should mention here ;
    1) I used to grill bacon / burgers in the attachment as shown by @[Deleted User]
What happened many years ago was I closed the grill after using …but for the life of me forgot to remove the handle 🔥
This made me panic and the had difficulty in picking up my cat at the time in my moment of distress 🙀
Thankfully , fire brigade arrived sharpish and we were very lucky!
    This brings me to ..
    2) when grilling / toasting things, always cook with door open .
Remove grill tray and handle and do not put back until compartment has cooled down fully !
If cooking things other than toast watch out for fat splattering above .
Also do not cook on the highest shelf !

I forgot 3)  I inherited this kind of setup in my flat but will never use it due to the above 😼

One point I am not quite sure on
If I have to preheat , do I switch Griller on and put temp to 250 and then insert slice or do I heat oven to 2500 and then switch to griller
    Many thanks
