Scrap car value
Daughter has an 11 plate Meriva that has been condemned by our local well trusted garage. The bodywork is good for its age as is the interior but it is uneconomical to repair due to engine problems caused by a blown head gasket.
Could anyone advise what sort of return she could get from selling it to a local breaker please?

It varies - your best bet is to contact a few and get a quote. If you Google for "scrap car prices" there are quite a few "price comparison" sites that will give you a price. Wet finger in the air ... I'd guess something like £150, something around that ballpark.Another option is to stick it on Ebay, Gumtree, Facebook etc. As long as you clearly and honestly describe the known faults, there's a fair chance someone will buy it for spares, or to repair themselves if they're handy with a spanner. You could always break it yourself and sell the parts online - though that is a bit of a hassle, and you need the space to be able to store the bits, so it's often not a realistic option for many people. To raise the old chestnut - is it really uneconomical to repair? Depends on the extent of the damage, of course - but even if you're looking at several hundred pounds, if that then gives you a reliable car it could be well worth it. Depends on the condition of all the other components, as well - but if everything else is in pretty good condition, you could take the view that "I'd never be able to buy an equivalent car for £900", or whatever. Worth considering.2

There are lots of online resources to get multiple quotes for scrap prices online, including WeBuyAnyCar which will give you a rough idea.
If it is a total non-runner then you won't get as much especially if the scrapper needs to collect the car, maybe £150-200 but depends on the area you live, prices will vary quite a lot. If you have the time and space, breaking it yourself can raise a lot more money.
If it is still a runner then you might get a bit more, especially if you can drive it to the scrap yard. Have you actually had a quote for the head gasket? Might be able to get it done for £500 although the risk is that it can escalate price wise once dismantled if it is found to be a cracked head instead.
Are you sure it is failed head gasket? What are the symptoms and what has the garage done to diagnose?

It is still a runner but on borrowed time according to garage, we did investigate the viablity of getting it repaired but garage advice was that it would potentially be throwing good money after bad due to other issues they identified.
To be honest it was only bought as a stop gap to keep mobile after previous vehicle was written off in RTA so she is resigned to the fact that it is not worth saving.
Will ring around and see what prices we can get. Thanks for the help.0 -
If it's running then I'd definitely go the eBay route with clear description of the faults and see how it goes. Chances are you will get much more than scrap yard.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.1

Red corn offer great prices, A Peugeot 106 gets £320 and they collect.
Based in east London, get a quote and see if they pick near you.
They go as far as Peterborough.
Looks like £430.
