But if the level stops just below tray surface level, then it surely ain't a blockage, or else it would continue to drain away, even if slowly. If it stops near the top, then that suggests that somewhere along the waste, the pipe is also at that height = a mistake, surely?

I think you'll have to remove that section of ceiling again to access the pipework and see what's going on. If it was draining fine before he came, hwe's either fitted a trap that isn't suitable or he's disturbed something else.0
