What will happen to my cards?

I have been selling xmas cards from Santa on ebay. One woman ordered 2 for her neices in the US. I sent them out, but realised a few days later that id sent them with 1st class stamps on them (pregnancy brain lol)

As soon as i realised my mistake, i re-did the cards and sent them again with proper postage, making the US sending deadline. I also sent a message to the buyer, apologising for my silly mistake and promising to refind should these cards not arrive in time.

Now I am worried what will happen to the cards with 1st class stamps on them? Id hate for them to turn up in the US, and the recipient having to pay extra for them! Im hoping that they will just end up in a sorting office this side of the Atlantic, then eventually binned? Am i right?

If it's the same system as over here, the recipient will get a card pushed through the door asking for the extra postage, then it's up to them to pay or not.

  • If you are lucky it might slip through the system unnoticed, especially at this busy time of year.

I did the same thing last year when I sent a Christmas card to Australia and it arrived OK with no postal surcharge. Ditto a few years ago when I wrote to a friend in Holland and put a UK first class stamp on it by mistake.

if it has a return address its possible it could be returned before even leaving the country.
hwever less likely with mail being so busy

I know that. I was just wondering if it would leave the country with insufficient postage

No, it doesnt have a return address. I dont actually want it back, I just dont want the recipient to have to pay extra postage for it at her end.

Email your buyer again and advise her that 2 sets of cards may arrive. One set she has paid for and the other set are free but may require excess postage to be paid.

Suggest that she either refuses the free set with the incorrect postage or pays the excess postage and keeps the free cards for next year.

The excess postage is unlikely to be more than the value of the cards so she benefits.

Only a real grumpy idiot will complain about something so trivial.

Oh sorry, I forgot. This is Ebay and all buyers are grumps. :D

My buyer is actually in the UK, but i have explained everything to her, so hopefully she has passed on the news of my mistake to the US recipients.
