Basic NAS

Evening all,
Previously had 2 x Buffalo Linkstation NAS with an external HDD connected. Both of the NAS have died, however the HDD were fine once I removed them.
Looking to get another NAS, all I store is photos/videos/docs etc. I don't run a plex server or anything like that, so pretty basic.
After a lot of research the My Cloud (Not the Home variety) seemed to tick all my boxes, so purchased one for £115 off CEX. However, upon booting up, it's knackered so needs to go back.
Any suggestions for a similar priced NAS that would suit my requirements? Being able to access externally would be a bonus, but not essential.

Well a NAS can be as simple or as complicated as you like. Share a USB external drive on a desktop computer and that is technically a NAS. Same as plonking a USB external drive on a Pi built with Openmediavault. It works. Not the fastest thing you've ever seen but it works and its technically a NAS.

Got any old kit you could use as a NAS
Looking at TrueNAS and Unraid as options.
YouTube useful to see what others have done.
A long time ago you could get cheap network/usb enclosures but no one seems to do them now.
I have one of these LANdisk

I have a Synology DiskStation DS218j, which does the job and seems pretty solid.

If you have a spare PC then you can turn it into a NAS using Xpenology. It installs the Synology DSM software so looks like and acts like a Synology NAS1

Thanks for all your replies. I do have a space PC, however the cost of leaving it running 24/7 puts me off that idea.I did managed to bag myself a 3TB WD My Cloud on ebay for £50. That should do the job, and worst case i've got myself a 3TB WD Red HDD out of it.Only downside is they are turning off the cloud function come the 1st April. Think i'll see how I get on and if needed, get myself a Synology enclosure to put the HDD's in.So far I have:2TB HDD - From broken Buffalo linkstation1TB HDD - From broken Buffalo linkstation2TB external HDD3TB WD My Cloud0

If you can cope with a bit of latency it does not have to be on 24/7
Set it up to wake up when it gets accessed and sleep hybernate or even shutdown
Just make sure the main OS/restart file is is on SSD.
My second HDD in my PC that holds just files not used much hardly ever fires up.1
