Marriage allowance

in Cutting tax
Hi
For the past few years I have been on just a works pension which was below my personal allowance and my wife was working so have transferred the marriage allowance to her.
However she became ill last June and had to retire with a small works pension which is less in total than her personal allowance for the year. Also I have recently started to receive my state pension so now am receiving over my personal allowance and HMRC now say I will be underpaid this year and have coded out the underpayment in next years tax code.
My question is can I get the marriage allowance back for this current tax year as my wife won’t need it? I have cancelled the transfer for the coming year so it’s just the current year 21/22 I have a problem with.
Thanks

Yes you should be able to do that but it will need a call to HMRC as you want the change to be effective for the current tax year.
You may be a bit late now to get a new tax code for the current tax year (and have your pension company use it) but you will see the benefit when HMRC review the 2021:22 tax year later this summer.
For example if the amount you owe is reduced you will get a further revised tax code for 2022:23 reducing the underpayment that has been coded out.
An initial new tax code for 2022:23, including your full Personal Allowance should be forthcoming quite quickly, ready for the new tax year.
