Parcelhero - Returned Package

Does anyone have any advice on this issue:
I bought an alternator for my vehicle from a UK company based in Germany (didn't realise that at the time of purchase but that's a separate discussion!). Despite being advertised as suitable for my vehicle it didn't fit so I had to return it at my own cost.
I used Parcelhero and followed all the detail they asked for selecting DPD as the currier company. It was collected and made it all the way to Germany where the tracking information says the following

Sorry my post sent to soon....
The next update I get was this:- Dpd Deutschland Gmbh21 Feb, 202212:13 PMReturned to Sender by Customs/Gateway
Parcelhero have taken an additional sum of money from me to cover the cost of returning the package to me. I have been in a very lengthy conversation with them trying to get some clarity but they are unable to provide any and are basically washing their hands of the situation and saying it is out of their hands.
I am wondering where I stand.0 -
Could the P OA be to do with paying customs duty on the goods entering Germany?1

Did you get to the bottom of this? I have exactly the same issue and my customer is FURIOUS. It took over one week to get through customs, then they asked the consignee for the PoA info on Thursday, but didn't even give them 24hrs to provide it before marking it for return! It was through DPD like yourself, and they have said that there is no way to stop the return once initiated! Please let me know if you found out what/why and have any suggestions on how I can stop them sending the parcel back!
