Only offered variable tariff? No fixed tariff? British gas

I have not been offered any tariff apart from variable by british gas. Surely they should be offering a fixed tariff option too?

They don't have to.  And any fix would be more expensive than the variable in the current market.

You're lucky really. Some other comapanies have been trying to deny people the SVT to force them onto much more expensive fixes.

I was under the impression they had to. In the past when the prices were changing i always received a letter stating my new tariff prices and the prices of a fixed tariff.

Has anyone else been offered a fixed tariff by british gas for their gas?

You can always go to another supplier for a fix. You almost certainly won't like the price, though. Also the periods have shortened. 10 months seems to be the norm for Octopus fixes, at the moment.

Their only obligation is to tell you if they have a cheaper tariff than the one you are on, and if you are on a fixed tariff to tell you the cheapest available fixed tariff as well as the cheapest variable tariff.
There is absolutely no obligation to actually offer a fixed tariff, and based on another recent post is does seem they are backing away from offering fixed tariffs at the moment, probably due to the volatility of the market.
