I contacted EDF who supply my new home and they will only offer me a fixed rate.
Why?
thanks.

Your contract is now with EDF who have to give you the variable capped rate, so you need to insist. I'd also set up a direct debit with them or it will cost more.1

Don't accept a fixed deal and you will be on EDF's variable rate, They can't cut you off.

The fixed rate as so high at present. There will likely be further increases but was advised to stay with variable rate.

When you call have all the information ready - so the meter readings from the day you moved in, bank account details in case they want to set up a DD there and then. If they tell you you "have" to take a fix, you simply say "No I don't - my property is already supplied by you and I'm simply calling to confirm to you that we have moved in, and to tell you that we wish to remain on the standard variable tariff, and want to pay by direct debit". If they still try to push the point, ask if they'd like a few moments to go and check with a supervisor what Ofgem have to say...
