Credit on gas / electricity bills

I recently found out that my gas account is massively in credit. Can I claim the money back, or do I have to let my energy supplier hold onto it?

I've had an (unrequested) refund in the past (along with the DD amount being reduced) when I was very much in credit but I imagine it depends on your supplier.1
