Is it possible to claim back insurance payments?

I’ve recently been helping my Dad with his money and it’s a mess. His girlfriend was meant to be in charge of it all. He was paying for so many things needlessly.
Just one of the direct debits is for car insurance for a car he sold 3 years ago 😳
Is there any way of claiming any of it back? I’m assuming not as it’s his mistake but I would really appreciate any advice.
He’s 62, recently retired, and of sound mind, if that makes any difference.

He needs to contact the insurers and let them know, if he has proof that he sold the car 3 years ago the chances are better of getting something... hopefully at a minimum they'll waive the cancellation fees and a good outcome would be getting this years premiums returned. Anything more is probably overly optimistic.0

Until he asks he won't know. Some are more customer focussed than others.
