Crossovers are popular now (and command a premium), partially for the image but some people like the extra height which can be handy when loading smaller kids into car seats. They tend to have less internal space than the lower hatchback/estate equivalents though.

If you're borrowing and at the £15-17k range then it might be worth looking at MPVs like the Vauxhall Zafira or Combo Life. Tragically unfashionable but hugely practical.
Take the T Cross and Polo. T cross has same space in back, more headroom and 100L more space in boot which is pretty significant for a family car.

T Cross is also 20cm longer and 3cm wider than the Polo, though?
So it's more the same size as a Golf, which has 100L more space again.
T cross is built on polo platform. T Roc is built on the golf platform.

That doesn't mean it's the same size as a Polo, though.

    Polo:      4,053 mm long
    T-Cross: 4,235 mm long
    Golf:       4,258mm long.

Look. It’s based on the polo platform. It uses the same engines as the polo not the golf.

It’s the polo SUV. The fact is you were arguing that the SUVs are usually smaller than their equivalents. This simply isn’t always the case. As demonstrated here. If you want to claim that small SUVs are based on larger cars then sure. But as every review states the T Cross is the polo SUV.

The T Cross is built on the MQB A0 platform.
That's shared with the Polo, A1 Fabia, Kamiq, Ibiza, Arona and so on.

The T Roc is based on the MQB A1 platform.
That's shared with the Ateca, Karoq etc.

The Golf is on the MQB EVO platform.
That's shared with the Leon, A3, Octavia etc.

The MQB's all share the same front axle arrangement, pedal box and engine position but A0, A1, A2 and Evo platforms all have different wheelbases and track.

So technically the T Cross and Polo share same platform with the same track and wheelbase.
But the Golf and the T Roc have similar but not identical platforms as one is designed for a different wheelbase and track than the other.

I don't think the average car buyer cares if the T-Cross is based on the same platform as the Polo or the Golf. It's the same size as a Golf, so that's the obvious comparison.
That it has 100L more boot space than a car that's 9" shorter isn't exactly a surprise.

Price wise it's a bit less obvious because the T-Cross sits almost exactly between the Polo and Golf.

    I said:
"They tend to have less internal space than the lower hatchback/estate equivalents though."

Which I'll admit isn't very well worded. So I'll start again.

Crossovers tend to have less internal space than a hatchback of the same external size.
If your priority is height - then get the crossover. If your priority is space, get the hatchback.
