Reviving my SMETS1 smart meter

Over five years ago I was with British Gas who installed a SMETS1 smart meter. I then changed supplier to get a better deal and my meter immediately became dumb. Since then I have had to read it manually and the energy monitoring device no longer works. I have two questions. 1.  If I now switch back to British Gas will my meter become smart and send readings in automatically and enable my energy moniter to work again?.  2. Are there any other companies I could switch to that can cope with a SMETS1 meter.  I'm currently with Shell Energy due to the closure of my previous company and they definitely can't.

  • What is the make and model of your SMETS1 meter? Suppliers are in the process of enrolling SMETS1 meters onto the DCC Network. Once enrolled, your meter will no longer be supplier dependent.

I am surprised that your energy monitor isn’t working as it connects to the communications hub not to the network. That said, the lack of accurate tariff information may result in incorrect cost information on the IHD.

Thank you for taking an interest. My Gas meter is a Landis + Gyr E06122 56 and my Electricity meter is also a Landis + Gyr No. 17515474 2015. They were both installed on 8th Jan 2015.  Once I moved from BG the energy monitor did stop working but I had not thought to try it again more recently. You have now motivated me to search our many drawers to see if I can find it. I don't mind the tarriff information being wrong but if it could tell every one in our household just how much energy is being used that would be very helpful.
I would be grateful if you could tell me anything else when you know about my meters. There are quite a few numbers and barcodes on both so if I have misquoted anything please let me know.
  • My question has become redundant as I asked British Gas for a quote and they declined to supply me. It seems to me that this Smart meter rollout has been a complete fiasco.  The companies making and fitting them have made a lot of money and made fools of all the customers who had one foisted upon them.

I have the same set up, my Smets1 meters have been dumb for quite a few years and the monitor didn't work.
However, I got switched to Octopus when Avro went bust and recently I noticed Octopus started recording meter readings. I dug out the old monitor and it works fine so I guess mine have been re-enrolled. It has automatically updated to the tariff I'm currently on.

As I posted above, The DCC, the company that runs the smart meter network, has had an ongoing programme of enrolling SMETS1 meters ion to their network via an OTA firmware upgrade. They have been doing this in tranches based on meter manufacturer and models. If your meter cannot be connected to the network then the supplier is obliged to replace it.
