That 45p per mile is only 5p per mile for electric vehicles. I doubt anyone has access to electricity that works out at 5p per mile!

Driving a Tesla on the capped electricity rate (home charging) works out about 7p a mile.
No it’s not. The 5p rate is the advisory rate for reimbursement of company car drivers who pay for their own fuel (either where they use company fuel for private mileage or personal fuel for company mileage the other way) the equivalent rates for ICE are between 9p and 25p. EV’s get 45p a mile tax relief just like ICE for using a private car.

But as I’m pay 5p a kWh for over night charging of my EV which does around 3.5 miles per kWh costs 1.43p per mile, my deal ends at the end of the month and I move to 7.5p so 2.14p per mile.
Having just moved to a company car EV I can only claim 5p per mile, previously I had a private ICE and could claim 45p a mile. On this new 5p per mile, charged at home and paying the capped electric rate (approx 28p/ Kw) I am losing out.

I believe the difference in what you are claiming is down to moving from a private car for work related travel, to now having a company car.

The fact you also moved from ICE to EV is irrelevant. You would only be able to claim upwards of 9p/mile if your company car was ICE. Likewise if your private car was an EV and used it for work related travel would could have claimed 45p/mile.

I have just written to my MP, I am guessing that they are trying to push people to electric but it is simply not a option for me.  I am a freelance florist and cannot afford to spend £36,000 on the new electric equivalent of my current vehicle, I often travel more than the average 200 miles (average miles for electric charge) to remote rural locations with no charging point, and return often late at night when as a lone female I don't want to stop at some remote garage to charge and get home.  write to your MP is my suggestion

I don't think this is an attempt to push people onto electric; you'll still be able to use diesel for many years yet.

I also suspect that even with your use case, you could save a small fortune with an electric vehicle. Charging remotely at night is a valid concern though, but I'm sure there'd be ways round it with sufficient planning. Would the money saved from electric justify that planning? who knows.

There are also notes on the gov website that states that employers can pay more than 5p per miles if the actual costs can be proven to be more. Have you asked for more? What are colleagues with non EV company cars doing? Does the company pay for their fuel directly?

Do you have a company credit card? If you started paying for public charging at 60p/kWh (no tax implications on you if the company pays for it directly) they would soon start agreeing to a higher home charging rate for you!
