HOT WATER IMMERSION OR GAS???

Would I be right in stating that an immersion heater will now be cheaper than gas to heat water if used on a cheap night tariff?

Only if your night tariff is *really* cheap, under 8p/kWh.

Right now, with Utility Warehouse, in the Eastern Region, I can confirm that it would be. That will change as at the 1st April though. (Not though we have the option - our only method of heating water using gas involves a saucepan or the  camping kettle!)

You need to do your survey based on how much gas you use to reheat the cylinder compared to electricity. Gas boilers tend to be inefficient when re-heating HW cylinders ; there are also pipe losses to consider. For what it is worth, my cylinder takes an average of 6kWh/day of gas compared to 3.5kWh/day of electricity.

My cylinder takes more gas to heat, too, but a good part of that is that the cylinder is 42" tall but the immersion heater (which comes down from the top) is only 27" long. Gas heats the whole tank, electric only heats 2/3rds of it.

In which case yes, if your gas is on a capped variable tariff, you are one of the lucky few where it will be cheaper from April to use electricity than gas.
