Loss Adjustors

Looking for some advice, hopefully from anyone within the insurance industry who can talk from experience rather than hearsay. When an insurance company assign a loss adjuster to visit a property for whatever reason - in my case specifically damage caused by Storm Barra to my garage - what is their brief? Also how much are they typically paid by the insurer & is there any financial incentive for declining claims?

I’m in dispute with Ageas re the adjustors report, adjustor assigned by the Claims Consortium Group. If it ends up going to ombudsman I’d like to have as much background as possible as to standard insurers process/policy when it comes to accepting/rejecting storm damage claims.

Thanks in advance, Ian

  • It's been a long time since I worked in home insurance so take this with a pinch of salt as it could be quite outdated:

The loss adjustor is employed by the insurance company - to act as their agent (as they can actually come have a look at what has happened)
I am not aware of any financial incentive for them to decline a claim
Generally they have a fixed fee (say £75-£150) for a claim, then there will be additional fees for further visits/time/complications, I can't remember if it was ever a % of the claim value, but that might be how it works.

  • I know this isn’t what you asked for but just thought I’d add that I have claimed on my Ageas home insurance previously for a flood claim. A loss adjuster was appointed (different company from yours) and at no point during the process did it feel like they were looking to decline my claim or minimise costs. Everything I claimed was agreed to without argument.
