New to decorating - chimney breast cracks

Hi,
So we bought an older house and have just removed the paper in my sons room to redecorate. We want to paint as my daughter will pick at wallpaper.
What is the best way to solve the top of this chimney breast?
Is it okay to just polyfill these cracks, sand and damp seal paint to prime?
Thankyou
