Hi, acquired a cracked windscreen travelling on motorway over the weekend and I’m looking for opinions as to whether this is likely to be a repair or complete replace?

Hxxxxxxs advised they were unable to repair as they said it was in ‘weak’ area of windscreen and company policy was to not attempt repair but I’m interested to find out others views/experience if this look like a replace rather than repair? It is drivers side lower left just in the ‘blacked’ out area of the windscreen. I have insurance so covered either way although replace I will have to pay excess.

This likely is not your decision to make.  Normally, windscreen damage is covered by insurance with quite a small excess that does not affect your NCB by making a claim.  Once you notify your insurer, they will appoint their approved repairer (likely one of the national automotive glass companies) and the repairer will assess the damage against the rules and either repair or replace as is most appropriate.

FWIW (and I am not qualified in any way to really say) that looks like a "replace" to me, which matches what the company you visited say.  Also, as a consumer, replace is probably better as you know then you have the full repair as good as it can be and no risk of any residual weakness.  Windscreens are part of the strength of the car these days, not just a piece of glass filling a hole.

They can only repair chips, also you will have to declare it if you get quotes for insurance as it as listed on my policy as a claim.
It didn't affect the quote prices though.

How could you seriously expect someone to attempt a repair on that? It’s not your choice. It’s a replacement that is required.

    That's definitely a replace job.
What car is it?  Might be worth seeing if any local windscreen places can give you a quote.  A few years back my son needed a replacement on his old Yaris, and didn't have windscreen cover on his insurance.  We found a local guy who came out and replaced it for £150, he did a great job.  Might be worth thinking about if you're concerned that a claim will increase your insurance premiums (I realise that usually it's still cheaper to go through insurance if you have the appropriate cover - and lots of cars will cost rather more than £150 for a new windscreen!)

It is not just a chip but a crack so will need to be done for MOT, Likely a couple of jolts from potholes will extend the cracks

yep confirmed it’s a replacement, booked it via insurance and is being done next week. Taken them a couple of weeks to try and find one due to glass shortages (toyota yaris).
