Customs fees re’ exchanging imported item

Hello all,
I bought a motorcycle jacket direct from manufacture in Germany, naturally after customers fees it turned out not to be the bargain I thought it was (£140 cost plus £30 p&p then £68 customs fees/vat/admin), more fool me there.
however having finally got the thing delivered after Parcelfarce nearly lost it, I’ve tried it on and it appears to be made for people with pipe cleaners for arms so my svelt 34 waist and 40 inch chest will have to admit we are now an XL
can anyone advise as to if an exchange is going to amount to another order with yet more customs fees with some kind of refund at some point for some but not all of my fees or is there some kind of process to indicate I’ve paid it once and this is essentially the same item albeit bigger (if that makes sense).
am I better off putting it on eBay to get my £ back and buying local?

Need to use form BOR286 to reclaim the taxes from HMRC when you return the item.
